HILLSBOROUGH – A multi-agency pursuit and shootout left one person injured and the suspect dead, in what is described by officials as something out of a Hollywood action film.
The incident occurred just before 2:00 a.m. in Hernando County, where officials say a domestic violence incident occurred between a male suspect and a female victim. According to Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco, the victim drove to her mother's house in Wesley Chapel to pick up a child that the suspect and victim have in common. Upon arrival at the residence, the victim calls 911 to report that the suspect was at the residence. Moments later, dispatchers hear screaming and shots fired. Multiple deputies arrive on scene and the suspect begins shooting deputies. The Suspect flees in a vehicle and begins shooting at pursuing deputies.
Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister says the pursuit ended in Tampa after the suspect crashes his car in a retention pond and then fled on foot. Chronister says the suspect continued shooting at deputies who were pursuing him on foot. After a 4-shootout, the suspect ran behind a business complex and collapsed. The suspect was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he later died.
Officials say the victim was shot during the incident in Wesley Chapel but she is expected to make a full recovery.
Multiple agencies discharged their weapons during the shootout and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is currently investigating the incident.
No law enforcement officers were injured during the shootout.
Officials have not released the identity of the suspect at this time.
Body camera footage of the incident is expected to be released by Pasco, Tampa, and Hillsborough County. The Hernando County Sheriff's Office does not utilize body cameras.
