BROOKSVILLE – Democrat Candidate for County Commissioner Kathleen Cummings has died, sources say.
Fire Rescue responded to her residence on Winding Creek Drive after receiving reports that Cummings was discovered unresponsive inside her home on Saturday.
Cummings taught 12th-grade English at Springstead High School and planned to return to teaching this fall.
A close friend of Cummings, Carla Johns, tells R News, "Despite our political difference, Cummings was an amazing person with a big heart. She loved helping the homeless and children in need."
Cummings' opponent Commissioner Steve Champion shared his condolences, stating, "I was shocked to hear the news of Kathleen's sudden passing. My heart goes out to her family in their time of grieving."
The cause of death has not been released but sources say Cummings had underlying health problems that may have led to her death.
Cummings was just 40 years old.
