Suspect Changes Story After Confessing to Shooting Girlfriend in the Back of the Head

SPRING HILL – The Hernando County Sheriff's Office has identified the suspect in last night's execution-style murder that occurred in the Pristine Place gated community. ORIGINAL STORY

According to officials, 61-year-old Roland Maurice Akins told investigators he was involved in an argument with his live-in girlfriend at their home on St. Ives Blvd. Akins claims the victim was holding a gun and when he took it away from her it accidentally discharged, striking the victim.

Prior to an interview with detectives, 911 dispatchers advised deputies that Akins stated to a neighbor that he shot his girlfriend in the back of the head and was signal 7 (Deceased). Click Here for Dispatch Audio.

Akins was booked into the Hernando County Jail and charged with 2nd Degree Murder. He is currently held without bond.

February 29, 2024 – 1:17 A.M.

SPRING HILL – An investigation is just getting underway into a fatal shooting that occurred late Wednesday evening in the Pristine Place gated community.

Just before 11:00 p.m. Wednesday, dispatchers received a call from a resident on St. Ives Blvd who claimed a man approached them covered in blood and admitted to shooting his girlfriend.

Numerous deputies arrived on the scene within minutes of the call and placed the suspect in custody without incident.

Upon entering the residence located at the 3400 block of St. Ives Blvd, they located the victim in a back bedroom with a single gunshot wound to the back of her head.

The victim's identity is unknown, but sources say she was just 30 years old.

The suspect's identity has not been released by officials.
