Rape Investigation Underway in Spring Hill, Suspect Behind Bars

SPRING HILL – Detectives with the Hernando County Sheriff's Office have charged a Spring Hill man with raping an underage victim.

According to the Hernando County Detention Center website, 51-year-old Husam Abdul Latif Shawkat is charged with Sexual Assault and Lewd and Lascivious Behavior against a minor between the ages of 13 and 15 years of age.

A crime scene has been active at the suspect's residence located at 7417 Blackhawk Trail since around 5:00 a.m. this morning. Several neighbors contacted R News with concerns about the heavy presence of law enforcement at the residence.

Shawkat remains is held on a $110,000 bond.

The Sheriff's Office has not released details into the investigation.
