HERNANDO COUNTY, FL – The Hernando County School District announced today that they are adding a new K-9 to aid School Resource Officers (SROs) in locating contraband on school campuses.
According to school officials, Hernando County Sheriff's Deputy Eric Burburan and his Black Labrador Retriever "Skyy" will be patrolling all school campuses throughout the district.
"This is a proactive step to increase security measures on our campuses," said Brandon DeRespiris, Director of Safe Schools for the district. "We want our staff, students, and visitors to be aware when Skyy is on a school campus, she is on the job, working."
"Our school board was certainly excited to approve this contract," Superintendent Ray Pinder said. "Adding trained personnel like Skyy and Deputy Burburan will allow us to build one more layer to our safety plan. And, it won't hurt that students will love her".
Officials say students and staff will all have to fight the urge to pet or play with Skyy.
