BROOKSVILLE, FL – A Hernando County Sheriff's Office Detective is on paid administrative leave in response to allegations he stole FOP (Fraternal Order of Police) funds while acting as treasurer for the lodge.
According to an email sent to all members of FOP Lodge 164, a recent financial review flagged numerous credit and debit transactions on cards issued to Treasurer Bruce Nichols. FOP officials stated that the charges appeared to be for personal use and not for the benefit of the lodge or its members.
FOP officials say Nichols was unable to justify the charges during an interview and immediately resigned as treasurer.
HCSO was notified about the alleged theft and has placed Nichols on administrative paid leave pending the outcome of the investigation.
FOP Officials say they will allow its members to decide on what course of action to take against Nichols, including pursuing criminal prosecution with restitution, waving prosecution and allowing Nichols to repay the stolen funds, and revoking his membership from the FOP.
Neither the FOP nor HCSO have released a statement to the public regarding the alleged theft.
